Gilbert & Ellice Islands Stamps
A British colony in the South Pacific. The first stamps, issued in 1911, were stamps of Fiji overprinted Gilbert & Ellis Protectorate.
In January 1976 the islands became two separate Crown Colonies. The Ellice Islands were renamed Tuvalu and attained independence in 1978. The Gilbert Islands, became independent in 1979 and the name was changed to Kiribati.
