Algerian Stamps
French stamps were used on Algerian mail from January 1st, 1849. Beginning in 1924, French stamps were overprinted ALGÉRIE. These were superseded in 1926 by the first stamps inscribed for Algeria, but Algeria reverted to the use of French stamps between 1958 and 1962. On attaining independence, Algeria started its own stamp program in 1962.
